  5. The IRIX 6.5 Applications CD, November 2002, is a companion to IRIX 6.5.18.
  6. This CD contains the IRIX Desktop and various desktop applications.  It 
  7. replaces all previous IRIX 6.5 Applications CDs (June 1998 through May
  8. 2002).

  10. Application upgrades shipped with the IRIX release are either Full images
  11. or Overlays.  Updates to Full images are found on the Applications CD whereas 
  12. updated Overlays are found on the IRIX 6.5.18 Overlay CDs.  Additional
  13. applications can be found on the Base IRIX 6.5 CDs. To install the new
  14. versions of Overlay applications you must install IRIX 6.5.18.  
  15.  
  16. IMPORTANT 6.5.18 Apps CD NOTE:
  17. Because the .related_dists file has been removed from the IRIX
  18. 6.5 Apps CD distribution, users may not be aware of the
  19. /CDROM/dist/dev and /CDROM/dist/extras directories.  To access 
  20. these use the `open` option in Software Manager.

  43. Other Changes
  44. -------------
  45.   * InSight, SgSearch, and Infosearch changed from being overlay images
  46.     to being full images.  Because of the changes for InSight several
  47.     images were rebuilt simply with book format changes and no s/w
  48.     changes.
  49.   * Dynaweb has been removed from the IRIX Applications CD since its
  50.     functionality has been integrated into InSight and Infosearch.
  51.   * License Tools changed from being an overlay image to being a full image.
  52.   * Several IRIX products have been retired and removed from the
  53.     Applications CD. These products are IRISAnnotator, InPerson, PeoplePages,
  54.     and SGI Photoshop Performance Pack.
  55.   * Two Isogon products (formerly Gradient Technologies),
  56.     LicensePower/iFOR IS4.0.1 CRK and LicensePower/iFOR IS4.0.1 ARK
  57.     have been removed from the IRIX Applications CD.  Customers interested
  58.     in updates to these products should contact Isogon directly.
  59.   * Netscape FastTrack Server has also been removed from the IRIX
  60.     Applications CD.  This product's functionality has been superseded
  61.     by SGI Web Server based on Apache.  Customers with previous versions of 
  62.     Netscape FastTrack Server from 6.5 and above can continue to 
  63.     use the product.

  65. Important Notes About the Products
  66. ----------------------------------
  67. Java2 environment
  68. The Java2 suite of tools includes the Java2 Runtime Environment,
  69. Java2 Development Kit, and the Java2 plugin for accessing the Java2
  70. environment from within the Netscape and Mozilla web browsers.  These
  71. Java2 images will install and co-exist with the existing Java v118
  72. run time so existing Java applications will continue to function.

  74. CDE 5.3
  75. This new release of CDE 5.3 is dependent on the updated version of
  76. ToolTalk that is included with IRIX 6.5.18.  A ToolTalk patch will
  77. eventually be created that will allow this version of CDE to install
  78. on earlier versions of IRIX 6.5.X.
  79.  
  80. Netscape Communicator Client
  81. Netscape Communicator Client 4.79 is part of the default distribution
  82. on this CD. Customers who only use the browser functionality (and
  83. not the email, newsgroups, etc.) may prefer to install the Netscape
  84. Navigator Client (netscape_lite) 4.79. From Software Manager, open 
  85. /CDROM/dist/extras to install this product.  
  86.  
  87. Beginning with Netscape 4.75 the default browser is compiled N32 so 
  88. existing Third party Netscape plugins will not work with the new N32 
  89. browser. Several plugins do exist in N32 versions.  Depending on 
  90. which plugins you depend on you may want to install the O32 version 
  91. of the browser.  These are in non-default installed subsystems of 
  92. netscape and netscape_lite.

  94. Teleffect Client for Windows NT
  95. The Teleffect product enables the sharing of a single keyboard and
  96. mouse between multiple IRIX or Windows NT systems.  An NT install
  97. shield for Teleffect is located in /CRDOM/NT/TeleffectInstall.exe.

  99. Release Notes
  100. -------------
  101. If you choose to read the release notes for products before installing 
  102. new products, you can now view the release notes easily from Software Manager.
  103. From the desktop Toolchest choose System, then Software Manager.  This
  104. will bring up the Software Manager window.  Choose to Customize Installation
  105. by typing /CDROM/dist into the Available Software box.  A list of products 
  106. available for installation will come up.  If the product name is highlighted 
  107. (similar to an HTML link) then there are Release Notes available.  Simply
  108. click on the link to bring up the Release Notes window.
